Winston James grew up in Brooklyn in the Downtown and East Flatbush areas.

He has always loved music and from age twelve to his mid-teens studied the clarinet, trumpet, and piano.

In High School, with his creative baritone voice, he was convinced by a teacher to consider broadcasting. Within a few years he was interning at WOR Talk Radio in and also at CBS Television where he helped produce the economic reports.

He received a communications degree from Brooklyn College where he wrote for The Excelsior newspaper. During this time he also reported the news and played classic and contemporary rock and jazz at the campus radio station WBCR - 1090.

Winston has also spent some time in sales and as a classroom elementary schoolteacher.
