Steal This Radio with Mitchel Cohen

Feb. 3, 2008

Hi Mitchel,

I've been holed up at work and glued to my work bench all weekend frantically trying to complete something by Monday. I decided that while doing that, I could make my time more enjoyable by listening to several recent installments of your show. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed them, especially the two-part interview with Brian Tokar. While I agree with most of what was said, there is one point I take issue with. You both said that the most commonly engineered crops are corn, soy, cotton (seed), and canola, implying that the "organic" forms of these crops are healthy. That isn't so. These four foods are quite new in the human diet. In the case of corn and soy, it's true that people have been eating them for thousands of years, but not the oils--no one separated the oils from the rest of these plants and ate them until about a hundred years ago. And while soy is a traditional food in the mysterious orient, it was never consumed to the same degree as today. Canola oil is one of the newest oils on the market--barely 20 years old. Here are some of the sources (actually all the same source, I admit) for my claims. I think you'll find them very interesting.

Mr. Tokar points out correctly that GE crops are found mostly in processed foods. I think that you and he would agree that processed foods are not healthy and that no one should eat them, even if they are made from organic ingredients. They are not only bad for our health, but the processed food industry is big and powerful and quite influential in Washington--a very large part of the "odious machine" that is featured at the beginning of your show. I truly believe that the world would be much better off in more ways than one if this industry went out of business. The only way that will ever happen is if people stop eating their products.

Regards,

Steve Salchow

Hi Steve,

Good point you're making, too. Canola oil -- I'd never eat it. Percy Schmeiser, the Canadian Canola farmer who was sued by Monsanto for stealing their property rights when their G.E. proprietary genes were found in some of his Canola, and who is sueing Monsanto now for trespassing on his land, told me that he would never eat Canola oil and didn't recommend it to anyone else.

I'm not sure about the dangers of organic corn oil or organic soy oil, though I see your point and I don't use those oils myself.

The latest health fad is coconut oil, which is a reveral of what they were saying 7 or 8 years ago.

Thanx!

Dear Mitch,

Dynamite show. I just love the things you do. I must get in touch with
Ashanti Alston. I'm teaching 7th Grade Soc. Studies in E. Harlem. It would blow my students' minds to hear that when Alston was just a little older than them, he was liberating men from prison with a blow torch. What a far cry from 50 Cent and their other role models.

Thanks again.

Love,
Marcey

Hi Mitchel,

Nice job on the radio show. I listen every week via podcast.

I am very unhappy about how the debate about the war and other political issues is going. In order to add some of what's lacking, I have started a blog. You can view it at:

I hope you'll check it out and join the discussion by adding your comments.

Show sounds great - love the music you're using! Unfortunately, the speakers on my computer suck, but I will try to listen.
