The European City of Culture program was conceived in 1985 when the great Greek actress Melina Mercouri was Greece's Minister of Culture. Athens was the first city. In 1999, it was renamed European Capital of Culture. Paris, Genoa, Bruges, Helsinki, Lisbon, Madrid, Florence and Plague are among the designated cities

Sarasota: A Small Town on Cultural Steroids

Running Through Turin, Italy and London, England

This week "Let's Travel" Radio takes you to the 38th annual New York City Marathon along with an estimated 38,000+runners who ran the 26.4 mile course through all five-boroughs of the city. The women's winner was "Queen Paula", the British entry who holds the women's record time. Interestingly enough her team was managed by Nick Bitel who assures our listeners that next year's marathon in London will
offer adventurous travelers a chance to see the city's historical sights, all with in walking distance of the
race itself. You name it. Big Ben has been restored. The Parliament will allow visitors, and
London Bridge is just a short jog away. Restaurants, theatres, and some of the most diverse lodging in Europe are available. Nick tells us why. April 13, 2008 is the date.

From the Italian side, Pietro Chiabrera, who directs the marathon in Turin, Italy, gives us a bird's eye view of what to expect in their marathon which coincidentally falls on the very same date as the London one. Whether its 17th century architecture, hand-made chocolate savories, gourmet food and wine, and, of course, truffles for which his region is known for, there's a lot to see and do in Turin, or Torino as the natives pronounce. All of this and more this week on "LET'S TRAVEL" on the Tribeca Radio Network.

Fall Foliage

This week show producer and editor Michael Zufolo takes us to the Adirondack Mountains in New York State to see the Fall "colors" and learn about the area. On his way up from New York City he visits High Falls Gorge in Wilmington. Catherine Reisch, the site's area director and CEO talks about the uniqueness of the park.
Then its off to Lake Placid and Saranac Lake where he meets up with Mary Hotaling, Executive Director for Lake Placid, who tells us about when it all started back in the mid-19th century. Mike Delahant ,who oversees
the Robert Louis Stevenson Cottage, gives us a reason to visit his special domain containing the world's largest collection of RLS's memorabilia, a place where the author wrote many of his famous novels. A visit to the new Wildlife Museum in Tupper Lake provides us with a nature course unparalleled anywhere. After Lake George and
Fort Ticonderoga, it's off to Sarasota Springs where we visit the notable Canfield Casino, which had its heyday in the "roaring twenties". It now houses the Saratoga Historical Society. A short jaunt from here is the Saratoga Racing Museum. Newly renovated it contains the most extensive display of horse racing history in the country.
