Come

in January as the 2008 European Capitals of Culture.

The
European City of Culture program was conceived in 1985 when the great
Greek actress Melina Mercouri was Greece's Minister of Culture. Athens
was the first city. In 1999, it was renamed European Capital of
Culture. Paris, Genoa, Bruges, Helsinki, Lisbon, Madrid, Florence and
Plague are among the designated cities
